ROOM PLANNING

Bedside light that leaves room for your book.

A bedside light needs to work when you are tired, reading or trying not to wake someone else.

Start from the pillow

Think about how you sit in bed and where a shade will appear in your line of sight. A beautiful bulb that shines directly into your eyes is unlikely to be a good reading companion. Look for a shade or diffuser that makes the light comfortable from the position you actually use.

Keep the table useful

A compact table lamp leaves space for a book and a glass of water. If the bedside surface is particularly small, a wall-mounted light can free it entirely, but hardwiring needs to be planned with an electrician.

A portable lamp is easier to move as furniture changes. Check the base dimensions and where the switch sits, then make sure the cable can reach an outlet without crossing a walkway.

Choose the kind of light you need

A directional head such as Beam Wall is useful for a reading spot. Pleat Table spreads a softer glow through its fabric shade. Orbit Wall offers a small opal sphere of ambient light. A room can use more than one of these approaches.

Pairs can have different jobs

Two people may use the same bedroom differently. You can repeat a finish to keep things connected while giving one side a directional reading light and the other a softer shade. Check the switch and dimming details on each fitting before making the final choice.

Product examples refer to the fictional LUME collection. Confirm specifications and installation requirements with a qualified professional for a real project.
